1937 - 2020
C’est avec tristesse que nous vous informons du décès de David G. Ryan, survenu à l’Hôpital général de Montréal le 28 septembre 2020 à l’âge de 82 ans et 9 mois.
Le professeur David G. Ryan était d’abord et avant tout un élève exceptionnel à l’école primaire et secondaire St Patrick de Québec. Il a poursuivi ses études avec brio à l’Université Queen’s à Kingston, en Ontario, où il a obtenu un baccalauréat en sciences et une maîtrise en génie physique. Il a ensuite poursuivi ses études et obtenu un doctorat de l’Université de Birmingham, en Angleterre.
Au cours de cette étape de son parcours, il a remporté de nombreux prix prestigieux, dont la Médaille du Gouverneur général et certaines des plus importantes bourses d’études au Canada. Il est ensuite revenu en Amérique du Nord pour enseigner la physique à l’Université Cornell à Ithaca, dans l’État de New York, s’établissant ensuite comme professeur de physique à l’Université McGill à Montréal. Au cours de ses années à Cornell et à McGill, il a également poursuivi des études sur les particules dans diverses installations de recherche aux États-Unis et au Canada.
David était aussi un fervent sportif. À l’école secondaire, il jouait au baseball et au curling. Pendant son séjour en Angleterre, il est devenu un marin accompli alors qu’il faisait partie de l’équipage du champion britannique qui a piloté leur voilier biplace dans plusieurs régates. De retour au Canada, il a joué au curling pendant de nombreuses années dans le circuit de curling de la région de Montréal, et faisait des sorties occasionnelles en voilier la fin de semaine.
Même s’il était connu comme une personne tranquille, David aimait être avec les gens et, pour lui, c’était un plaisir d’assister à des sorties en famille. Il a aussi été très généreux et a appuyé de nombreux projets communautaires. On se souviendra de lui pour sa gentillesse, pour sa détermination à transmettre l’éducation de façon compréhensible, pour sa grande générosité, pour sa grande humilité et aussi pour son rire communicatif.
David rentre maintenant chez lui pour rejoindre le Seigneur, où il sera également accueilli par ses parents, Marguerite Mill et William John Ryan, ainsi que par ses frères, William (Bill) (feu Barbara Robertson, la mère de ses enfants), Robert (Bob) et sa chère sœur, Joan.
Il laisse dans le deuil son frère Peter (Carol Ann Ross); ses sœurs, Louise (Paolo Cusan) et Marie (Ralph Tesson) et leur défunte mère (Pauline Bois), Patricia Whyte (Robert Ryan) et de nombreux cousins, nièces et neveux.
Il laisse aussi dans le deuil ses amis du curling de Montréal, ses collègues enseignants, de nombreux étudiants qui ont suivi ses cours, et une amie très spéciale, Ann Frezell.
En raison des conditions sanitaires actuelles, il n’y aura pas d’échange physique de condoléances. Un service religieux privé aura lieu à une date qui sera déterminée ultérieurement.

It is with sadness that we wish to advise you of the death of David G. Ryan, which occurred at the Montreal General Hospital on September 28, 2020 at the age of 82 years and 9 months.
Professor David G. Ryan was first and foremost an outstanding student at St. Patrick’s Elementary and High School in Quebec City. He went on to be a brilliant student at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, where he earned a Bachelor of Science and Master’s degree in Engineering Physics. He then furthered his education obtaining a Doctorate from the University of Birmingham, in England.
During this part of his journey, he won many top awards including the Governor General’s medal and some of the top scholarships in Canada. He then returned to North America to teach Physics at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York and then to settle down as a Physics professor at McGill University in Montreal. During his years at Cornell and McGill, he also pursued particle research studies at various research facilities in the United States and Canada.
David was also an avid sportsman. In high school, he played baseball and curling. While in England, he became an accomplished sailor while crewing with the British champion who skippered their two-man sailboat in multiple regattas. Back in Canada, he curled for many years in the Montreal area curling circuit while being the occasional weekend sailor.
Although known as a quiet person, David loved being with people and for him, it was a pleasure to attend family outings. He was also a very generous person, supporting many community projects. He will be remembered for his kind and gentle manner, for his determination at transmitting education in a comprehensible way, for his great generosity, for his grand humility and also for his communicative chuckle.
David is now going home to join the Lord, where he will also be welcomed by his parents, Marguerite Mill and William John Ryan, as well as his brothers, William (Bill) (the late Barbara Robertson, mother of his children), Robert (Bob) and his dear sister, Joan.
He leaves to mourn his loss, his brother Peter (Carol Ann Ross), his sisters, Louise (Paolo Cusan) and Marie (Ralph Tesson) and their late mother (Pauline Bois), Patricia Whyte (Robert Ryan) and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He also leaves to mourn, his Montreal curling friends, his fellow teaching colleagues, many countless students, who shared his classroom and a very special friend, Ann Frezell.
Because of the present sanitary conditions, there will be no physical exchange of condolences. A private religious service will be held at a date yet to be determined.
Donations in memory of David may be made to “L’Arche l’Étoile”, 218 rue St-Sauveur, Québec (Qc) G1N 4S1, a wonderful organization who took such special care of our sister, Joan, for many years.
